Meta Breaks Ground on 1 GW Data Center in Lebanon, Indiana with $10B+ Investment

Meta has broken ground on a new data center campus in Lebanon, Indiana, describing it as one of the company's largest infrastructure investments to date. The facility is engineered to deliver 1 gigawatt of capacity once fully operational and carries an investment exceeding $10 billion. The announcement follows Meta's January 2026 nuclear energy agreements and represents the physical infrastructure that will support the company's expanding AI training and inference workloads.

The Lebanon campus is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. Meta has committed to matching 100% of the new data center's energy use with clean energy. On the water side, the facility uses a closed-loop, liquid-cooled system that recirculates the same water, requiring zero water withdrawal for most of the year. Meta has additionally committed to restoring 100% of the water consumed on-site to local watersheds, and has pledged more than $120 million toward critical water infrastructure in the region. The company will also invest in road and utility improvements as part of the surrounding infrastructure package.

Nuclear Power Agreements

The Lebanon data center is backed by a set of nuclear power agreements Meta announced in January 2026. In total, Meta secured up to 6.6 GW of nuclear capacity through three separate deals. Vistra Energy will supply more than 2.6 GW from its Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio and Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania under 20-year power purchase agreements, including 433 MW of capacity uprates described as the largest nuclear uprates ever backed by a corporate customer. TerraPower will deploy up to eight Natrium reactors providing 2.8 GW of baseload capacity paired with 1.2 GW of integrated energy storage, with the first units coming online no earlier than 2032. Oklo will develop an Aurora fast-reactor campus of up to 1.2 GW in Pike County, Ohio, with phased deployment beginning as early as 2030.

These agreements, combined with a previously announced deal with Constellation Energy, make Meta one of the largest corporate purchasers of nuclear energy in American history. The nuclear power strategy is driven by the need for 24/7 carbon-free electricity that cannot be satisfied by intermittent renewable sources alone at the scale Meta is building.

Jobs and Community Impact

During the peak construction phase, the Lebanon campus is expected to generate more than 4,000 construction jobs. Approximately 300 permanent operational positions will follow once the facility is operational. Meta has committed $1 million per year for 20 years to the Boone REMC Community Fund, which will support local energy bill assistance programs. The scale of the investment—a single campus exceeding $10 billion—reflects the capital intensity of the AI infrastructure buildout that hyperscalers are currently undertaking. Competing facilities from Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are similarly measured in the billions per campus.
